Coming from five strokes behind, four top IGU Merit list golfing teenagers Aadil Bedi (age 13) Vivek high School; Jaiveer Singh (age 15); Karandeep Kochar (age 15) both from St John High School; and Jairaj Singh (age 17) of DAV Model School Sector 15, showed some superb golf shots at closing holes and made the Chandigarh Golf Club proud by winning by 1 shot in inaugural Inter Club Junior Golf Championship held at Delhi Golf Club from 21st to 22nd august, 2014. The 22 Golf Club from India floated their talented four members teams for the two day event held at countries most prestigious Delhi Golf Club with narrow fairways, full of wild growth and forest on both side of the fairways.
After close of day one, home club players were leading the tournament by five shots with a score of 229. Chandigarh Club was at the fourth position with a score of 234, with Karandeep at 73, Aadil at 79, and Jaiveer at 83. Three best cards were taken out of four for the final team score tabulation.
Facing an uphill task on the second day with windy conditions and 40 degree heat amid humid conditions, all four players started cautiously and played some super golf. The best three cards calculated were of Karan 73, Jaiveer 73 and Aadil 74 who stunned everybody with a one stroke victory over the home club — Delhi Golf Club A Team with total score of 455. Last couple of holes was full of drama as Karandeep and Jaiveer sunk 20 feet putt for birdies and Aadil spun the ball high in the air from behind the green, which landed 2 inches from the flag. Delhi Golf Club B team finished as the second runner up with a score of 461. Retired Chief Commissioner Income Tax and Chairman Tournament Committee, Delhi Golf Club, Ashwani Luthra IRS, gave away the prizes to all the winners.
Interestingly all the four players are trained by Coach Jesse Grewal and are regular playing members of the Chandigarh Golf Club. The proud coach Jesse Grewal said “To beat home club players at DGC is a commendable effort by our youngsters. They all are very hard working, disciplined and experienced golfers. Aadil and Karan have been India’s number one players in the IGU Merit list. President Birinder Singh Gill also appreciated all four golfers and said that “All the four players have proved their ability, experience and strength and made the City proud at the national level. i wish them all the success for their future events”.
Keeping in mind the success of this tournament, the Golfing Society Chandigarh in order to encourage and promote golfing among young talent has decided to tie up with corporate and UT government for financial assistance. They intend to host a circuit of three days invitational team events “Chandigarh vs Rest of India” on Ryder Cup format played over three golf courses in Chandigarh. Each team will be of four members (boy/girl) one each from A, B, C and D Category. The first tournament is scheduled to take place in the last week of December, 2014. The winning team after three tournaments will be given Green Blazer.
