Keekli Reporter, 28th September, 2013, Shimla
As another school session ends for the Autumn Break, a perfect day was planned by the Director and Principal, Sunita John and her ever so hardworking teaching and non teaching staff, who ensured that every student got the opportunity to step on the stage and give a brilliant performance. The Chief Guest for the occasion was the Hon’ble Minister for Horticulture, Irrigation, Public Health & Information Technology, Vidya Stokes, who has been actively involved in sports apart from leading an extensive social and busy public life and understands the importance of education in a child’s life. The Senior Speech Day – 2013 began with the School Report read by Principal John, through which she briefly outlined the academic as well as curricular activities that had taken place in the school since the beginning of the session.
She summarized the exemplary feats achieved by students for the ICSE and ISC examinations; the educational trips that were organized; sporting events such as sports days’, basketball, hockey, karate, marathons, gymnastics and much more, be it inter-class, inter-house, inter-school or at the state and national level; inter-house competitions held in the fields of music, elocution, debates, art etc; the annual carnival; the art and crafts exhibition; the social awareness programmes conducted for both parents and students; the students exchange programme; or the Smart Class programme. All these clearly showcased that the curriculum was not just about teaching but for the all round development of the students a number of activities are planned during any academic session.
Principal John said, “AucklandSchool has created history by introducing Scuba Diving as an extracurricular activity and thus became the first girls school in the country. The course is certified by the Profession Association of Diving Instructors, USA in which 78 girls and 5 teachers completed the course.” She further added that The Pioneer had given Auckland House School an A+++ rating on 16th January, 2013 based on a perception survey conducted among the public and academicians who were asked to select and rate the top schools of their region on the basis of academic reputation, infrastructure provision, faculty and brand value. She ended on a note to Auckyites to “continue to press on, playing the game of life honourably, without surrendering and moving on to achieve the higher things in life”.
Hon’ble Minister, Vidya Stoke took the dais and was full of praises for the Principal, her staff and the students for the elegant way they had conducted the programme. She said, “Providing a sound education base as well as promoting the highest spiritual, moral, intellectual and esthetical values among students was clearly evident from the School Report and an outstanding effort had been made by all in providing the all round development of children. AucklandSchool students have earned a name in every field, having bought laurels to the school.” She further added, “Quality education should be provided for training and leadership, as responsibilities widen the mind and enlarge the interests of the students, as well as the teaching techniques on which modern civilization is based. Education demands discipline of reasoning and emotions”. She also praised the Head Girl Devika Raj, for her beautiful speech in which Devika not only thanked her mentors for guiding as well as disciplining her at every step but also expressed sadness at having to end her journey in this school.
Soon after the prize distribution, the variety entertainment programme began with a hymn by the school choir, followed by an entertaining English play A Husband for Breakfast, which delighted the audience with its light humor and satire. The play is about a drunken husband who sells his wife for a gold piece and how ingeniously and shrewdly his wife gets out of the deal and also in turn is able to profit from the whole situation. The piano recital by V Lalremruati was quite outstanding.
The orchestra played two melodious Hindi musicals on the sitar, Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram and Saare Jahan Se Accha impeccably showcasing the hidden talent of the girls. Soon the stage was taken over by girls enacting a Hindi play Baccho Ki Dua, highlighting the plight of children and child labourers’, whether they are serving and washing dishes in a local dhaba or selling fruits and vegetables or polishing shoes. After this a beautiful song was sung by the trio – Zomuanpuii, Zoranthangi and Zodenthari, who were also part of the School Band and the team then took the stage performing few great numbers which left the audience asking for more but time was an issue.
The last but not the least was the excellent and exceptional dance drama performed by the students depicting the life of Mira Bai, tracing the steps since she first falls in love with Lord Krishna and her wholehearted devotion towards him, until her death. Each and every song, in between narrations, storytelling, dance performances, spot lighting were immaculately and flawlessly done.
A perfect ending to a beautiful day!!!
