Keekli Reporter, 27-29th September, 2014, Shimla

J2A three day karate championship was organized by the H.P. Seigokan Goju Ryu Karate-Do Association at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, Shimla, under the able-guidance of the Association’s President Sensei Dinesh Thakur; General Secretary, Sensei P.S. Panwar; Secretary, Sensei Dinesh Thakur and Organizing Secretary, Sensei Ajay Thakur. This organization is well known as its name is now listed in the Limca Book of Records for training 150 students to a Black Belt Level in One Day. Food Security Officer and a Member of Anti-Tobacco Flying Squad, Ashok Mangla presided as the Chief Guest.

General Secretary Panwar said, “The motive behind these events is not only about learning this art, but to teach children about self defense, especially girls”. He emphasized on the fact that such training classes should be introduced as a subject in schools. Teams from eight districts, mainly Shimla, Solan, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Una participated in the event. In the three day competition each event will have 4 to 6 rounds and 30 to 40 panel members are present to assist us. The event started with the Talent Round on day one as Kata, a display form of Kubatay was presented by the boys.

J3Kata is a Japanese word describing detailed patterns of expert movements, either solo or in pairs, while Kumite means “grappling hands” and is one of the three main sections of karate training, along with kata and kihon. Nearly 450 participants in the age group of 6 to 18 participated in various categories as they represented their districts and schools respectively. A few participants from different schools namely, HB Colony School, RVK School, Duttnagar, DAV School, New Shimla, St. Edwards School, Saraswati Paradise International Public School, Princeton, Sacred High School, Loreto Convent Tara Hall among others had many enthusiastic karate players, in which almost 40 per cent were girls.

Sahil after winning the 14-16 years Black Belt competition said, “The challenge here is very hard and breathtaking. Participants are judged on the basis of their talent and moves learnt during practice sessions. So it is very hard for the judges to take decisions and a sharp eye is kept on the smallest of mistakes”. Another representative Aman Gill from IGSSC won the silver medal in the age group of 10-12 years and told us, “I am not as happy as I would have been after winning the gold medal but I will work hard and practice for next year. Members here are very good and helpful in every way. Food offered for the lunch was also tasty and hygienic”.

J4Students were a happy lot as they found new friends through during the event and at the same time learnt new things through interaction with fellow competitors and teachers. District Kangra Team’s trainer said, “If they follow this science with great dedication, our students can compete at International levels and reach the world stage to showcase their talent”. All the organizers and panel members were proud that a competition of such talent level and especially first of its kind was being organized in the state.
