Recap of Roller Skating in Shimla
President, District Roller Skating Association Shimla gave a quick recap of the history of roller skating in Shimla and its now growing popularity in the City and other states. A rare collection of news clippings and photographs of doyens such as Jawarhar Lal Nehru, Raj Kapoor, Rajiv Gandhi, I S Johar, Balraj Sahani was a treat to study, as all had, had their stints at the Roller Skating Rink in Shimla. The foundation of the Roller Skating Association in Shimla is credited to late Shri SP Mumick in the year 1965. Since then numerous competitions have been held on a regular basis but over a period of time people lost interest and it became a dying sport.
President Mumick further added that the great legend Dara Singh also visited the Rink when he was awarded the Rustam-e-Hind title, and similarly the list goes on, with many Bollywood stars and Army personnel have visited the Rink and have rolled few laps. “I am in talks with other roller skating associations to revive the sport in a massive scale and organize regular competitions for children. We also wish to take the sport to various parts of Himachal — Dharamshala, Kullu, Manali, Mandi, Hamirpur, and encourage schools, colleges and universities to start roller skating classes in the campus. For the same we are willing to provide coaches on very nominal rates, to hold classes thrice a week on a regular basis to interest children in this sport. Efforts will be made to popularize the sport and encourage children to enroll and start practicing”, he concluded.
