In a landmark move aimed at promoting sustainable tourism and inclusive development, Himachal Pradesh is set to open up its scenic and culturally rich border regions to tourists under the newly launched Border Tourism initiative. CM Sukhu will officially inaugurate the initiative during his two-day visit to Kinnaur district, starting from the frontier village of Shipki-La.
According to a government spokesperson, the initiative—launched in collaboration with the Union Government—represents a major milestone for the state, especially for the remote tribal regions along the Indo-China border. Tourists will now be able to explore breathtaking destinations such as Shipki-La, Lepcha-La, Gue Monastery, Dumti, Khana, the Rani area of Sangla, Chitkul, and selected locations in Lahaul-Spiti, which were previously restricted due to security concerns.
“This initiative reflects years of persistent efforts led by Sukhu to make border tourism a reality in Himachal Pradesh,” the spokesperson said. “It is a step toward responsible tourism, aiming to strike a balance between national security, environmental sustainability, and economic upliftment of local communities.”
Newly revised protocols will allow local residents and bona fide tourists to access these areas with valid identification, easing previous restrictions that required special permissions from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the Indian Army. Security agencies will continue to oversee safe and regulated movement in these regions.
The state envisions multiple benefits from the initiative, including improved infrastructure, increased livelihood opportunities for tribal communities, and greater national integration. The promotion of tourism in these border areas is expected to not only highlight their natural and cultural richness but also bring long-overdue development to some of India’s most remote villages.
“This is more than a tourism initiative—it is a strategic and socially inclusive step that reinforces the state’s commitment to integrating its remote frontier areas without compromising their unique heritage,” the spokesperson added.
The Border Tourism initiative positions Himachal Pradesh as a pioneer in combining national interest with regional development, setting a precedent for similar projects across the country.
