The Department of Economics and Statistics celebrated the 19th Statistics Day in Shimla on Monday, marking the 132nd birth anniversary of Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis — the pioneer of India’s modern statistical system and architect of large-scale sample surveys.

This year’s celebration, observed nationwide, was themed 75 Years of National Sample Survey (NSS), recognizing the survey’s crucial role in building India’s statistical infrastructure since 1950. A special presentation highlighted the survey’s contributions in areas such as employment, education, health, consumption, and rural development.

Secretary, Finance, Economics, and Statistics, Dr. Abhishek Jain, who was the Chief Guest, stressed the importance of robust data systems for ensuring transparent governance, responsive public administration, and evidence-based policymaking. He underlined the need to strengthen statistical capacities at state and district levels to achieve inclusive development outcomes.

“Data-driven decisions are the foundation of sustainable development. Let us continue to embrace data-driven approaches to enhance public welfare,” Dr. Jain said, urging stakeholders to transform statistics into instruments of progress and prosperity.

Dr. Vinod Rana, Economic Adviser, also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the pivotal role of statistics in designing, monitoring, and evaluating effective policies. Associate Professor Ajay Sood from Himachal Pradesh University’s Economics Department, officers from the Economics and Statistics Department, and students from various Shimla colleges also participated.

A state-level quiz competition was held to engage youth and ignite interest in statistics. Participants from across Himachal Pradesh took part enthusiastically, receiving awards and participation certificates to mark the occasion.
