The Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), Shimla, inaugurated a two-day national seminar titled “Historical and Philosophical Roots of India’s Strategic Culture: From Antiquity to the Present.” The event began with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony, drawing thematic inspiration from ancient Indian texts such as the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Arthashastra to explore India’s evolving perspectives on war, peace, and diplomacy. Mehar Chand Negi, Secretary of IIAS, welcomed participants, followed by Dr. Sumit Kumar of Delhi University, who outlined the seminar’s objectives. In his keynote address, Dr. Sheshadri Chari, Emeritus Professor at Savitribai Phule Pune University, emphasized how India’s philosophical traditions continue to shape its contemporary strategic outlook. The seminar includes sessions on the evolution of India’s strategic culture, domestic imperatives, regional cooperation, and soft power diplomacy, featuring prominent scholars from institutions like JNU, DU, Pondicherry University, and IIAS. The seminar will conclude on July 24 with a valedictory session and presentation of key takeaways.
