The sacred town of Kullu witnessed the grand beginning of the International Kullu Dussehra Festival as Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla inaugurated the week-long celebrations at Rath Maidan today. He also participated in the traditional Rath Yatra of Lord Raghunath Ji, joined by Lady Governor Janaki Shukla. The inauguration marked the start of one of India’s most vibrant and spiritually rooted festivals, celebrated with deep reverence across Himachal Pradesh.

While interacting with the media, Governor Shukla highlighted that Dussehra is celebrated in diverse ways across the world, but in Himachal Pradesh, the tradition of pulling the chariot of Lord Raghunath Ji holds a unique spiritual and cultural significance. He said that such practices not only preserve age-old traditions but also reflect the strength of collective cultural identity.

He further added that the festival is a symbol of unity and a reminder of our rich heritage. Emphasising the active role of youth, he remarked that the younger generation in Himachal Pradesh continues to stay connected to their roots, preserving customs by participating in the Rath Yatra with devotion and pride.

Addressing a pressing social concern, Governor Shukla made a heartfelt appeal to make Himachal a drug-free state. He said that this sacred land, known as Dev Bhoomi, must remain untouched by the threat of substance abuse. He called on communities to work together to eliminate this menace and create a safe and healthy environment for future generations.

Reflecting on the recent natural calamities that affected the state, the Governor acknowledged the significant losses incurred. However, he praised the courage and resilience of the people, who managed to restore normal life with determination and unity. He urged citizens to avoid construction near rivers and streams and to contribute actively to environmental conservation to protect the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.

Following the ceremonial inauguration, the Governor visited several exhibitions set up by government departments, boards, corporations, and non-governmental organisations. He appreciated the exhibits and encouraged continued efforts to highlight Himachal Pradesh’s achievements. He emphasised the need for collective responsibility in preserving the state’s natural beauty and cultural richness.

Adding to the grandeur of the occasion, more than 300 deities from across Kullu district are taking part in this year’s Dussehra festival. The presence of these deities is a hallmark of the celebrations and reflects the spiritual fabric of the region. The ritual of Dev Milan, where local gods converge at the festival, creates an extraordinary atmosphere of devotion and cultural unity.

Governor Shukla concluded his address by expressing hope that the festival would inspire collective progress and harmony. He said that such celebrations serve not only as a reflection of our identity but also as an inspiration to build a brighter, more peaceful, and united future.
