The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), under the IndiaAI Mission, has launched the India AI Governance Guidelines, a national framework to ensure the safe, inclusive, and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across sectors.

The guidelines were unveiled by Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, in the presence of S. Krishnan, Secretary, MeitY, and senior officials including Abhishek Singh, CEO, IndiaAI Mission, and Prof. B. Ravindran of IIT Madras. The launch marks a milestone in India’s journey toward responsible and human-centric AI governance, ahead of the India AI Impact Summit 2026.

The framework outlines seven guiding principles for ethical AI, six pillars of governance, and an action plan to promote innovation, transparency, and accountability. Emphasizing a “Do No Harm” approach, Prof. Sood highlighted that the mission will support innovation sandboxes and risk-mitigation systems within a flexible ecosystem. Krishnan reiterated that the initiative prioritizes human-centric development and the use of AI for public good, while Abhishek Singh emphasized the government’s focus on creating a safe, inclusive, and trustworthy AI ecosystem.

Developed by a high-level expert committee chaired by Prof. Balaraman Ravindran of IIT Madras, the guidelines will serve as a reference for policymakers, researchers, and industry stakeholders.

During the event, winners of the IndiaAI Hackathon for Mineral Targeting, held with the Geological Survey of India (GSI), were announced. CricSM AI won the first prize of ₹10 lakh for AI-based mineral mapping, followed by Knowledge and Data-Driven Mineral Targeting Approach (₹7 lakh) and SUVARN (₹5 lakh). A special prize was awarded for an AI/ML-based solution identifying new exploration areas for critical minerals.

The dual announcements reinforce India’s commitment to safe, responsible, and inclusive AI innovation, driving sustainable progress for People, Planet, and Prosperity.
