Raising strong concerns over recent Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu cautioned that the move could severely impact apple growers and orchardists in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing a press conference in Srinagar, the Chief Minister warned that reduced import duties under FTAs with countries such as New Zealand, the United States and the European Union could lead to a surge in imported apples, walnuts and almonds. He said this influx would put immense pressure on domestic producers, making it difficult for them to secure fair prices for their produce in the coming years.

Highlighting the economic significance of horticulture, Sukhu stated that Himachal Pradesh’s apple industry alone has an annual turnover of nearly ₹5,000 crore and supports around 2.5 lakh families directly and indirectly. Similarly, horticulture forms the backbone of Jammu & Kashmir’s rural economy, with apples and dry fruits being key sources of livelihood for a large population.

He asserted that such trade agreements could undermine the interests of farmers and called for a policy reassessment to safeguard domestic agriculture. Referring to Rahul Gandhi, the Chief Minister said the Leader of Opposition has consistently raised farmers’ issues and alleged that attempts to silence him would not succeed.

Reaffirming his party’s stand, Sukhu said the Congress remains committed to protecting the rights and welfare of farmers and orchardists in both the hill states.
