In a landmark development for healthcare in Odisha and Eastern India, Union Health Minister J P Nadda virtually inaugurated the Liver Transplant Unit and commissioned a state-of-the-art Surgical Robotic System at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. With this, the institute becomes the first government medical institution in Odisha to establish a comprehensive robotic surgery program.
The new liver transplant facility aims to provide world-class, life-saving treatment for patients with end-stage liver disease from Odisha and neighbouring states, including West Bengal and Assam, while offering economically disadvantaged patients access to affordable care. The Institute has already performed two successful liver transplants, with both patients recovering well.
Addressing the occasion, Nadda highlighted that these initiatives align with the Prime Minister’s vision for organ donation and represent a major milestone in strengthening public healthcare infrastructure. He said, “These additions will significantly elevate the quality of healthcare delivery and ensure access to advanced, technology-driven treatments for patients across Odisha and neighbouring regions.”
The Liver Transplant Programme features a dedicated operation theatre, advanced ICU, and specialty clinic for post-transplant follow-up, ensuring a seamless continuum of care. Simultaneously, the new Surgical Robotic System will initially serve Urology, Gynaecology, and Paediatric Surgery, improving surgical precision, reducing recovery time, and minimizing the need for patients to travel outside the state for complex procedures.
Nadda congratulated the entire AIIMS Bhubaneswar team for their dedication and professionalism, noting that the success of these initiatives reflects the coordinated efforts of surgeons, clinicians, nurses, technicians, and support staff.
Aparajita Sarangi, Member of Parliament, Odisha, and Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava emphasized that AIIMS Bhubaneswar continues to set a benchmark in technology-enabled, patient-centric public healthcare, in line with the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of accessible, high-quality healthcare for all.
These advanced facilities will operate under PM-JAY and Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi, ensuring that economically weaker patients receive full transplant care without financial hardship. The inauguration coincides with this year’s observance of the “Angdaan Jeevan Sanjeevani Abhiyaan”, reinforcing the national emphasis on organ donation and life-saving medical interventions.
With the launch of these cutting-edge services, AIIMS Bhubaneswar positions itself as a regional hub for advanced medical care, innovation, and organ transplantation, expanding healthcare access for thousands of patients in Odisha and Eastern India.
