The Himachal Pradesh government has strengthened its Green Panchayat initiative by introducing a dedicated welfare component for orphans and widows, marking a move towards combining renewable energy development with social upliftment.

Under the initiative, 500 KW ground-mounted solar power projects are being set up in 100 Gram Panchayats across the state. In a revised revenue-sharing structure, 25 percent of the income generated from these projects will now be allocated for the welfare of orphans and widows through the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment.

As per the updated model, 20 percent of the revenue will go to the state government, 20 percent will be used for operation and maintenance through HIMURJA, 10 percent will be allocated to HIMURJA, 25 percent will be reserved for Panchayat-level development works, and the remaining 25 percent will directly support welfare schemes for vulnerable groups.

Officials said the initiative is aimed at ensuring that green energy growth also translates into inclusive development. The state government has been focusing on strengthening support systems for marginalized communities through various schemes.

Under the Mukhya Mantri Sukh Ashraya Yojana, orphaned children receive monthly financial assistance of ₹4,000, benefiting around 6,000 children in the state. The government is also providing land for housing to eligible landless beneficiaries and financial aid to help them build homes and live with dignity.

For widows, assistance of up to ₹3 lakh is being provided for house construction, along with educational support for their children to promote better opportunities for higher studies and self-reliance.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said the government has launched several welfare schemes aimed at improving the socio-economic condition of vulnerable sections, ensuring equal opportunities and long-term empowerment.
