Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi said the Congress has regained control of the Chamba Urban Local Body after 10 years and the Chuwari ULB after 15 years, securing both President and Vice-President posts in the recent elections. Addressing a press conference, he said Congress-backed candidates also performed strongly across Chamba district in urban local body polls.
Negi alleged that the BJP is trying to divert attention from rising prices of petrol, diesel, and LPG by misrepresenting Panchayati Raj election results. He said inflation remains a major concern for common people.
He added that Panchayat elections are not fought on party symbols and depend largely on local issues and candidates, accusing the BJP of politicising the results. The Minister claimed Congress won in 29 of 53 urban local bodies in the state, including all six in Kangra district, while BJP faced setbacks in several regions.
Referring to Assembly bypolls, he said the BJP lost six of nine seats and questioned the Opposition’s leadership over the results. Negi also flagged concerns over reduced MGNREGA funding and its impact on rural development, employment, and Panchayat-level projects, urging the BJP to clarify its stand on key public issues.
