Highlighting that tree plantation is a long-term commitment to human survival rather than a one-time symbolic event, Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta launched the 11th annual afforestation drive at Samlech village in Solan district. Organized by the environmental group Sabhya Re-Foresters, the initiative focuses on long-term sapling survival and community-led ecosystem restoration.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor underlined that the true measure of a plantation drive lies in nurturing saplings until they mature into healthy trees. Pointing to growing climate vulnerabilities across the region—such as cloudbursts, unpredictable rainfall, shrinking glaciers, and frequent landslides—he called on citizens and youth to integrate environmental care into their daily routines and reduce single-use plastics.
Highlighting the sacred relationship between Indian culture and nature, the Governor noted that protecting the fragile Himalayan ecosystem is a national responsibility. He praised PM Narendra Modi’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign for turning conservation into a popular civic movement. During the event, Governor Gupta awarded students who won regional painting and quiz contests, while special guest Shyam Jaju commended Sabhya Re-Foresters for their decade-long dedication to forest preservation.
