On October 12, 2026, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) officially dedicated its interactive, WebGIS-based Cyclone Warning and Marine Weather Services Decision Support System (DSS) to the nation. Launched under the chairmanship of Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of Meteorology and 3rd Vice President of WMO, during the bi-annual Pre-Cyclone Exercise Meeting for the post-monsoon season, the platform is now accessible to the public on IMD’s official portals. The interactive DSS merges critical data on cyclone tracks, intensity, wind distribution, storm surges, and river catchment rainfall forecasts into a unified, user-friendly interface. Designed to bridge the gap between technical forecasting and actionable disaster management, the tool empowers state agencies, defense forces, and citizens to make timely, life-saving decisions during extreme weather events.
The launch date carries historical significance, marking the anniversaries of Very Severe Cyclonic Storms Phailin (2013) and Hudhud (2014), both of which made landfall on October 12 and showcased India’s world-class early-warning capabilities. The pre-cyclone review meeting brought together around 230 participants across 30 national and state organizations, including NDMA, NDRF, Indian Navy, Coast Guard, Central Water Commission, and coastal state disaster management teams. Featuring live demonstrations of the DSS along with reviews of operational readiness, the session reinforced inter-agency coordination to ensure accurate weather alerts translate into effective ground response during the upcoming cyclone season.
