Stressing that every citizen has a stake in protecting the Himalayan ecosystem, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh stated on Tuesday that safeguarding this vital region is a collective national responsibility. Speaking at a special session during the 13th All India Sustainable Mountain Development Summit at SKUAST-K, Srinagar, the Minister emphasized the need to balance developmental aspirations with strict ecological safeguards.
Highlighting the Himalayas’ role as the backbone of India’s ecological security, water resources, and rural livelihoods, Dr. Singh cautioned against unregulated activities and unauthorized construction that heighten disaster risks in fragile mountain zones. He outlined several key initiatives by the Ministry of Science and Technology, including climate research centers, glaciology training, and expanded weather radar networks under Mission Mausam.
Pointing to successful scientific interventions such as the Aroma Mission and the Purple Revolution in Jammu and Kashmir, the Minister illustrated how market linkages and bio-farming can create robust local economies. He called for unified action from local communities, policymakers, and young entrepreneurs to ensure long-term environmental and economic sustainability in the region.
