Former J&K Deputy Chief Minister and senior leader Kavinder Gupta emphasized that persons with disabilities deserve dignity, equal opportunities, and encouragement rather than sympathy. Speaking as the chief guest at the Deepawali Fest 2026 organized by Special Olympics Bharat (Himachal Pradesh chapter) in Sundernagar, Mandi, he commended special athletes for bringing international honor to the state and the country through their exceptional performances.
Highlighting central initiatives, he praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of turning Divyangjan into active partners in national progress. He lauded the union government’s decision—initially launched in 2015 and updated in 2025—to include Special Olympics medalists in its cash award scheme. Congratulating Turin World Winter Games medal winners Shalini, Anil Kumar, Aakriti, Giridhar, and Hemchand, alongside performers Shivanjali and Shubham, he acknowledged the crucial backing of organizations like NHPC and BBMB, as well as local coaches and families.
During the event, Special Olympics Bharat President Dr. Mallika Nadda highlighted India’s growing dominance in adaptive sports, noting that Himachal Pradesh athletes contributed 22 of the 33 medals won by India at the 2025 World Winter Games in Italy. Encouraging community support under the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative, Gupta urged attendees to buy handcrafted items made by special children, noting that supporting their creations fosters creativity, self-confidence, and financial independence.
