In response to the recent havoc caused by torrential rains in Shimla, a proactive step has been taken by the authorities to ensure the safety of residents and students. Mr. Aditya Negi, Deputy Commissioner of Shimla, announced today the establishment of a dedicated committee aimed at evaluating the safety conditions of various unstable areas and all educational institutions across the city.

The committee comprises esteemed experts in the field of geology and disaster management. Notable members include Mr. Anil Kumar Singh Rana, Mr. Gaurav Sharma, Mr. Suresh Bharadwaj, and Mr. Atul Sharma, who will contribute their expertise as committee members. Additionally, Mr. Sunil Verma, an assistant geologist, will serve as the secretary of the committee.

Addressing the press, Mr. Negi emphasized the urgency of the situation and the need for immediate action. He stated, “The recent heavy rainfall has highlighted vulnerabilities in certain areas and the need for improved disaster preparedness. Our priority is to assess the extent of damage caused by the rains and to identify measures for prompt preventive actions.”

The committee’s responsibilities encompass collaborating with the district administration to conduct thorough inspections of areas prone to instability. Their assessment will not only focus on physical damages but also on the structural integrity of schools. The committee is entrusted with the task of providing swift recommendations to address any immediate safety concerns.

Mr. Negi further elaborated, “We are committed to the safety and well-being of our citizens, especially the students. The committee will work in tandem with the district administration to ensure that a comprehensive report is submitted promptly.”

It is noteworthy that in response to growing demands from various quarters, Mr. Negi had written to the Director of the Industry Department on August 23, 2023, urging the deployment of a team of geologists. This step was taken to assess the safety of all schools and vulnerable locations in Shimla. Taking cognizance of the urgency, the Industry Department swiftly appointed a team of experts to carry out the necessary inspections.

The establishment of this committee marks a significant stride towards enhancing safety and disaster resilience in Shimla. The collaborative efforts of the experts and authorities are expected to yield actionable insights that will contribute to the overall well-being of the city’s residents and students.

On the first day today, the committee inspected the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, Shimla city, Police Line Kaithu, Loreto Tara Hall School, and Dayanand Public School in Shimla. On this occasion, Deputy Commissioner Shimla, Aditya Negi, was also present. The Deputy Commissioner said that this was the first day of the committee’s inspection, and in the coming days, inspections of other places will also be conducted as per the requirement. After the inspection, the committee will submit its inspection report.
