The picturesque hills of Shimla are set to host the Three Days International Film Festival of Shimla, attracting film enthusiasts from across the globe. In a unique twist, the 9th edition of this festival will feature screenings not only at Gaiety Theatre Shimla but also at Model Central Jail Kanda and Nahan, making it the sixth time IFFS has expanded to three different venues for the event.

Cinematic Magic In Unconventional Venues
The innovative concept behind these additional venues is to bridge the gap between the inside world and the outside world through the medium of cinema and to nurture the creativity of prisoners. By organizing such activities and involving jail inmates in the world beyond prison walls, IFFS aims to inspire and motivate prisoners who often struggle to find their place in society. Life in isolation within the prison can lead to depression and fear of institutionalization, making it essential to connect inmates with the outside world.

Mr. Pushp Raj Thakur, Festival Director of IFFS, expressed his enthusiasm for this year’s festival, saying, “We are excited to bring our festival to these unconventional venues. Following Mahatma Gandhi’s valuable words, ‘Hate the sin, not the sinner,’ this is an opportunity to bring the magic of cinema to unexpected places and engage with audiences in a meaningful way. Inmates deserve opportunities to explore the outside world, and cinema is the perfect medium to provide glimpses of contemporary society, creativity, and learning.”

The Three Days International Film Festival of Shimla has always been a prestigious event on the cultural calendar, celebrating the art of cinema from India and abroad. Including Model Central Jail Kanda and Nahan as screening venues represents a significant step towards promoting inclusivity and art appreciation in unconventional spaces.
These jails will host screenings, creating a unique atmosphere where the boundaries of cinema merge with the bars and walls of the prison. Festival-goers will interact with inmates, bridging the gap between society and incarcerated individuals and gaining a unique perspective on life within the prison.
The festival will feature a diverse selection of films from 20 countries and 24 states, including short films, documentaries, and feature films, offering a captivating array of cinematic experiences to the audience. The Three Days International Film Festival of Shimla is an annual event organized by Himalayan Velocity in association with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Language Art and Culture Department of the Government of Himachal Pradesh.
The festival celebrates the art of cinema from around the world, providing a platform for independent filmmakers to showcase their work and engage with a diverse audience. The festival’s primary goal is to promote cultural exchange and inclusivity through the medium of film.
