Keekli Reporter, 1st October, 2014, Shimla
The Senior Speech Day of Auckland House School was held here today in the presence of the Chief Guest Dr. D. K. Gupta (H.A.S.), Secretary, State Information Commission, Government of Himachal Pradesh, who was warmly welcomed by Director Principal, Auckland House School, Sunita John and Principal, Auckland House School for Boys, Micheal A John. The Programme commenced with the Principal’s Speech, wherein she read the school report and apprised all the distinguished guests and parents about the achievements and activities held during the current academic session. The School Head Girl Imran Kaur then took everyone on a memory lane as she recounted her experiences in Auckland House School. It was then followed by the address of the Chief Guest and the Prize Distribution Ceremony wherein the students were awarded prizes based on their academic and co-curricular achievements.
What followed next was sheer brilliance and a passionate variety entertainment programme for all present. The first presentation was an opening hymn sung by the Junior Choir “Colours of the Day”, followed by an English play titled “Cafe Murder”, which was a combination of both curiosity and laughter. The story was based on a girl Rosemary who was allergic to water and was murdered in a cafe by a waitress as she was celebrating her birthday along with her sisters. The events leading to the mystery and solving the murder were just hilarious, thus receiving a huge applause. This environment of suspense was brought back to normal by the Junior Choir, who sung another hymn “With a Smile and a Song”.
Opening the box of their infinite talent in all fields, the girls astonished the viewers with their next group performance by playing Indian Classical Music, using various musical instruments such as tabla, sitar and harmonium. The Senior Choir then melodiously sung the song “Ten Thousand Reasons I am yours”. The next surprise waiting for all was Kalbeliya, a Rajasthani dance performed with full energy and excitement that compelled all spectators to stand and dance. This was followed by a Hindi play “Asprishtya – Ek Abhishaap”, which shed light on the importance of equality between all in a society. The story was about a woman whose daughter dies because of the inequality in the society when a doctor refuses her check-up as she belonged to a lower caste group. In another accident, a mother a seen crying for her daughter’s life whose blood group is similar to that of a lower caste woman thus portraying the irony when the lower caste women says, “Where was your humanity and pain when my daughter was dying in front of you and no one came forward to help her”. The play concluded on the note that inequality is a curse on the society !
Next was a rocking performance by SHELZ, the All Girls Western Music Band on songs like “Knocking on Heaven’s Door”, thus electrifying the environment of the auditorium. Audience once again surrendered their hearts to the Senior Choir’s soothing melody “Happy”. Another power packed performance was given by the seniors with a Gidda “Ludhiyane Wali Jatti”. The grand finale was a heart-rendering tribute to Captain Vikram Batra for his heroic deeds and hoisting of the Indian Flag on Tiger Hill, Kargil along with his mates. A pure content of dedication, heroism and sacrifices done by our soldiers was visible in this realistic skit.
Highlights of the School Report
Principal John said, “This year we sent up 85 students for the ICSE and 54 for the ISC examination. I am pleased to inform you that as usual we had a cent per cent result with 94.8 % being scored by Ananyashree at ICSE Level. Apart from striving to attain exemplary academic standards, we at Auckland House School, believe in developing the all round human personality. In order to achieve this, the classroom, the playfield and the stage from part of the cumulative process of education”.
“Travel, it is said is one of the best forms of education. Keeping this in mind three educational trips were organized in the month of April. 60 girls accompanied by six Staff Members went to Ahmadabad. 77 girls and eight Staff Members went to Kolkata while 23 Junior and three staff members visited Dharamshala and Chandigarh. Tomorrow we have a group of 38 girls and four staff members leaving for Mumbai and Goa. All our trips are educative and the children always return refreshed and enriched after their travels”.
“Credit for training and encouraging the girls in various sports activities goes to our dedicated faculty member namely, Sangeeta Chauhan, Sushma Devi, C. Dutta, Pankaj Prabhakar and Ajay Thakur, as our girls have excelled in various sports competitions held during the year”.
“This year the Reynoo Mathur Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Isha Bhel of Form IX. The Late Mr. Arjan Singh and Mrs. Mohinder Kaur Batra Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Muskan Verma of Form X for being adjudged the Best All Rounder of the Year. Apart from this the school has disbursed scholarship and freeships worth Rupees 21,34,700/- and above , this year, to deserving students, both Girls and Boys Schools.
The much coveted Auktimus Merit Scholarship has been won by Suzena Das of Form VIII. The winner of this scholarship is awarded one year tuition fee i.e a sum of Rs. 16,700/-“.
‘I must state that the all round development and education of girl child is given the utmost importance at Auckland House School. While the School does its best for the children who enter its portals, I must say, this task is getting more and more difficult in modern times, when we look at the environment in which our children are growing up. Youngsters today are growing up to be more selfish, with less respect for elders and no regard for rules and regulations. It is against such circumstances that we need to build a positive school environment. Cultivating habits of discipline and promoting the right values from an early age has to be our main focus as values are ‘caught’ rather than ‘taught’. This is where we seek the support of the parents in re-enforcing what we seek to inculcate through the school. Josh Billings rightly says , “Train up a child in the way he should go and walk there yourself once in a while” “.
The Speech Day was a grand success and the parents were unequivocal in their praise of the same.
