The Union Cabinet, chaired by PM Modi, has approved the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III (GEC-III) scheme. This landmark decision aims to strengthen India’s Intra-State Transmission System (InSTS), enabling the smooth evacuation of up to 135 Gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy across states and Union Territories.
To address grid congestion, peak-hour demand, and renewable energy intermittency, the scheme mandates the deployment of 50 Gigawatt-hours (GWh) of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Targeted for completion by FY 2032-33, the total outlay for the project stands at ₹1,86,405 crore—comprising ₹1,36,378 crore for transmission infrastructure and ₹50,000 crore for battery storage. The Central Government will provide Central Financial Assistance (CFA) worth ₹54,082 crore, directly lowering transmission charges and keeping electricity tariffs affordable for consumers.
All new greenfield transmission components will be implemented via Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) under the Build-Own-Operate-Maintain (BOOM) model, while state transmission utilities will manage brownfield upgrades. This initiative directly supports India’s broader climate target of achieving 900 GW of non-fossil-fuel energy capacity by 2035, while generating substantial direct and indirect employment across the power, manufacturing, and construction sectors.
