The students of Government Girls Senior Secondary School Portmore celebrated their Annual Day and Prize Distribution function with great fervor and enthusiasm on 27th November, 2014 as the chief guest for the event was Honorable Chief Minister, Shri Virbhadra Singh. The Guard of Honor by the scouts was given to the Hon’ble Minister, followed by a March Past by students of Portmore School. The function began with lightning of lamp by Shri Virbhadra, guided by School Principal, Nisha Bhaluni. He also released the school magazine – Vatika and distributed prizes to meritorious students. Shimla City Mayor, Sanjay Chauhan; Principal Secretary Education, P.C. Dhiman; Director Elementary Education, Ashok Sharma; Additional Director Education R.K. Pruthi were also present on the occasion amongst the school faculty and school students.
The event began on a patriotic note, with a beautiful performance by the girls on Vande Mataram. Then Principal Bhaluni read the Annual Report outlining the achievements of the school she said, “2014 marked a year of consolidation and reflection. The results for classes 8th, 10th and 12th were outstanding. The school faculty has gone an extra mile in making the students understand and help them to perform well in the exams. Apart from inspiring students to achieve best possible academic results, they have also been encouraged to acquire habits of courtesy, mental flexibility, self discipline, openness of mind, dignity of conduct and mutual respect. No matter how long student stay with us, our school will have a deep and lasting effect in shaping their lives by developing confident understanding of their role in the society. Our pursuit of the connected curriculum, the release of both student and staff creativity in learning and the exposure to real life learning situations continues to set the school as future focused”.
A play was also staged by the girls, suggesting advantages and disadvantages of modern technology such as mobile phones and excess use of it. Greatly relevant in today’s world, if mobile phones are used in a good way, they can be very useful but when used excessively can lead to brain diseases. The students beautifully presented different folk dances including Kinnauri and Chamba dances, even the chief guest was tempted to be a part of the celebrations and joined the girls on the stage. The atmosphere was filled with festive celebrations and merriment.
The Hon’ble Minister appreciated the efforts of the school management and the faculty and informed the audience about the upcoming educational developments by saying that “It is always a pleasure to be among talented and hardworking students. As always the performance this year was marvelous. The State Government has accorded top priority to education and a budget provision of Rs.3,836 crore has been made for this sector which was 17 per cent of the total state budget. The state has made significant strides in the field of education and the government was endeavouring to maintain the highest education standards so that the students could become not only nationally but also globally competitive”.
He further added “Portmore School is one of the best educational institutes in the state which is imparting quality education to the girl students. The students of this institution have been excelling in educational and co-curricular activities. The Public Works Department will be taking up the job of fencing the school complex and construction of an alternative path for the school auditorium. He said that government would also consider providing one more hostel for the school”.
The event ended with the prize distribution by the Hon’ble Minister, Mayor Municipal Corporation Shimla Sanjay Chauhan and Principal Secretary Education P.C. Dhiman.
