CM Sukhu met Union Minister for Power Manohar Lal in New Delhi to advocate for Himachal Pradesh’s key interests in the hydropower sector. Describing power generation as a vital pillar of the state’s economy and energy security, CM Sukhu urged early Central intervention on long-pending demands.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister sought explicit clarification on issuing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) against the state’s free power entitlement and requested the prompt nomination of two Independent Directors from Himachal Pradesh to the SJVN Board. He also pressed for the handover of state-based power assets, including the historic Shanan Hydropower Project (currently sub-judice) and the 180 MW Baira Siul Project following the completion of its 40-year lease. Additionally, Sukhu asked the Centre to return unutilized BBMB land to the state for public infrastructure and the rehabilitation of displaced families.
Reiterating another major financial demand, CM Sukhu requested a 1% additional free power allocation for the Local Area Development Fund (LADF) from pre-2008 Central hydropower projects. He noted that state assessments project a net annual benefit of ₹23.21 crore for Himachal Pradesh with a minimal 1.15% tariff impact on consumer states. In response, Union Minister Manohar Lal assured the Chief Minister of positive consideration and promised swift administrative instructions to address the pending issues.
