The campus of Doon Valley Public School, Nalagarh witnessed a three hour long seminar on “Career Counselling” for students of classes 10th, 11th and 12th from resource person, Dr Rajwinder Singh, Director, Focus Institute, Chandigarh, who spoke at length about the various avenues which medical, non-medical, humanities and commerce streams offer for the students.

He specifically emphasized that medical and engineering are not the only options available rather there are plenty of option to explore, provided one keeps himself abreast with the changing trends.

Such seminars can prove to be a milestone in the direction. The seminar ended with an interactive session “Ask the Counsellor” segment, in which parents and students freely cleared their doubts and spoke about issues relating to career choices and how to pursue their chosen options. The inquisitiveness and concerns which they raised during the seminar regarding the choice of stream for their child on the basis of their acumen was stimulating and beneficial for the students.

Principal Namita Lal, said that the absence of such interactive seminars leaves the students as well as their parents with very few/limited option while groping in the dark looking for answers or relying on uninformed choices and decision. In our school we try to give maximum exposure to the children through interactive programmes on a regular basis and this seminar too had especially been organized for senior classes so that they can benefit from the expertise of Dr Singh.

According to Principal Namita Lal an interaction like this provides an opportunity for the parents as well as students to explore various options that are available other than the conventional careers like being a doctor, an engineer or a chartered accountant. Today the field of education is vast and varied about which neither the parents nor the students have proper knowledge. Through programmes like this, our aim is to educate both the parents and the students and also encourage students to interact with counsellors regarding any queries they have.
