Union Minister and veteran medical professor Dr. Jitendra Singh unveiled “Rheumatology Essentials”—a practical guidebook authored by India’s rheumatology pioneer Prof. Anand N. Malaviya and Dr. Prashant Kaushik. Speaking at the launch in New Delhi, Dr. Singh called for a return to patient-centric, clinically guided medicine. He emphasized a essential three-pronged approach: recognizing diseases early, avoiding unnecessary medical investigations, and ensuring timely specialist referrals. This strategy, he noted, prevents prolonged patient suffering, reduces excessive reliance on painkillers, and avoids unnecessary financial strain caused by over-testing.

Reflecting on the evolution of rheumatology in India, Dr. Singh paid tribute to Prof. Malaviya as a “teacher of teachers” who built the institutional foundation for the discipline at AIIMS, elevating it from an obscure field to a vital super-specialty. He highlighted how the new book provides clinicians, general practitioners, and emergency room physicians with a practical roadmap to differentiate between inflammatory rheumatic conditions, mechanical joint issues, and complex pain syndromes, ensuring patients receive targeted treatment without delays.

Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Singh addressed the broader landscape of medical education in India. He underscored the importance of developing high-quality scientific literature in Hindi and regional languages to support students learning in their native tongues. He commended the authors for compiling resources on specialized fellowship programs across the country, expressing confidence that Rheumatology Essentials will serve as a cornerstone for ethical, accessible, and high-standard healthcare for generations to come.
