Marking the ongoing Eye Donation Fortnight, the District Training Centre at the Office of the Chief Medical Officer in Shimla hosted a special awareness event, drawing enthusiastic participation from nursing students and medical personnel. The programme focused on tackling corneal blindness by educating future healthcare workers on the mechanics of eye donation, eligibility guidelines, and the vital responsibility of guiding families to pledge donations following a loved one’s passing.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Yash Pal Ranta urged the nursing students to serve as frontline champions for the cause, emphasizing that a single donor can restore sight to up to two individuals. He highlighted that the humanitarian procedure is handled with utmost dignity by medical professionals and noted that donations must take place within six hours of death. For those wishing to contribute, the Eye Bank at IGMC Shimla remains accessible round-the-clock at 9459319192.

The session also featured expert insights from Dr. Arti, Assistant Professor and Eye Specialist at IGMC Shimla, who delivered an educational lecture on shielding eyes from environmental hazards and adopting safe viewing habits for digital screens. Supported by district data presented by Dr. Tehseen, the event concluded with a strong appeal from Dr. Ranta, reminding attendees that eyes should be donated to grant the gift of sight rather than lost to cremation or burial.
