Girls Outperform Boys in the 8th District Level Karate Championship

Ashima Sharma, 16th-18th August, 2014, Shimla

The 8th District Level Karate Championship – 2014 was organised by the Karate-do-Association of District Shimla for three days starting from 16th – 18th August, 2014 at Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, Shimla, where more than 350 students from Shimla district participated in the tournament, which included more than 50 per cent girls. The highlight of the event was that the winners of the competition have been given an opportunity to represent the state at the national level.

General Secretary of Seigokan Goju-Ryu India, P S Panwar while talking about the competition said, “We have given a petition to the Government of India with a request to add Karate in the curriculum in schools all over India. We have Physical Training as a subject in schools but students do not gain anything out of it as the methods used are now obsolete. I believe each student should learn self defence techniques as these have capabilities to help them even in life or death situation. We will keep on bringing this issue up till we achieve success”.

General Secretary Panwar while talking about the performance of the girls in the competition said, “There was a time when martial arts was strictly meant for boys but now thing have changed not only in the city but also in the interior areas of the states. Girls are very good learners, I would say better than boys. Girls who have been learning Karate for four to five years have the confidence to face and defeat four well-built attackers at a time. Finding themselves fully equipped with the art of self defence, they never feel intimidated by anyone. There are 80 black belt holder girls in the Shimla District itself. It takes a lot of hard work combined with a tough exercise regimen to become second level black belt, which usually requires three to five years of hectic training even for an adult male”.

Prachi Singh Panwar, a student of Convent of Jesus and Mary School, Shimla said, “I consider myself lucky to be introduced to Martial Arts as it has boosted my self-confidence in a major way”. Another student, Abhishek Bhikta from Sacred Heart School said, “I have been participating in the district tournament since last two years but this year has been really special for me as I won for the very first time. I cannot wait to show my medal to my parents”.

Vidushi Chauhan, a black belt holder from Loreto Convent Tara Hall said, “There are very few girls in the state who are black belt holders. I am very proud to be among those few. I have worked very hard and suffered many injuries on the way to achieving this belt. I truly believe that Karate should be added as a subject in all the schools particularly for girls”.
