Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar paid homage to the police personnel who made supreme sacrifice for the sake of the country on the occasion of Police Commemoration Day organized by Himachal Pradesh Police at historic Mall Road, Shimla on Thursday. Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said that it was our duty to remember such police personnel who laid down their lives for our safety and the nation. He said that he knew about the external security and also recognized that the Indian army was protecting the country’s borders. But, the responsibility of the internal security of the country rests with our brave police personnel and they were playing an important role in fulfilling this responsibility, he added.

The police force take care of our safety when we are busy with festivals and other functions and provide services without caring of their own comforts, said Arlekar. He said that Police Commemoration Day was not only an occasion to remember the martyrs inscribed in golden letters in history but also inspires the police personnel. The State and Central Police Forces have a significant contribution in ensuring internal security despite the threat of disruptive elements, for which a grateful nation remembers them every year. On the occasion, the Governor also released Police Gaurav Geet.

Earlier, Director General of Police, Sanjay Kundu read out the names of all 377 police personnel who attained martyrdom during their service in the last one year. He said that in the last 62 years from 1959 to till today, about 36,000 officers and employees of various police forces have sacrificed their lives in the service of the nation and society. On behalf of the State Government, Special Secretary to the Chief Minister and Director Information and Public Relations Department Harbans Singh Brascon placed a wreath at the memorial. Senior police officers, former officers and other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.
