Following directives from CM Sukhu, the Himachal Pradesh Police has instructed all government and private educational institutions state-wide to bolster student security measures on top priority. Under new guidelines issued by Director General of Police Ashok Tewari, school principals and headmasters are required to personally audit campus safety, with a strict 30-day target to install and maintain high-definition CCTV surveillance covering entry gates, approach roads, and surrounding areas.
The heightened security push stems from a past abduction attempt near a Shimla school gate where three students were safely rescued, underscoring the urgent need for tighter preventive checks around school perimeters. Beyond hardware upgrades, schools must enforce visitor logs, ensure active supervision during peak pickup and drop-off hours, and maintain secure recording archives. District police chiefs and station officers have been tasked with assisting local schools, while a dedicated coordination meeting with Shimla private school heads is scheduled at Police Headquarters in early November 2026. Authorities have also urged parents to talk to their children about personal safety and familiarize them with the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) helpline 112.
