The Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) are advancing cleanliness, sanitation, and ecological conservation across India as part of the nationwide Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign. Through its expansive network of institutes, DARE-ICAR is actively mobilizing local communities and inspiring school children to adopt sustainable, environmentally responsible habits.
In the North-Eastern Region, ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute (ATARI), Guwahati, led an educational initiative in North Sikkim focused on grassroots waste management. As part of the program, students participated in an exposure visit to Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) North Sikkim, where they received practical training in organic waste recycling and vermicomposting to turn farm waste into nutrient-rich manure.
Simultaneously, KVK Ri Bhoi—under the ICAR Research Complex for North Eastern Hill Region, Meghalaya—conducted extensive cleanup drives targeting nearby villages and public roadside zones. KVK staff teamed up with local residents, emphasizing shared civic responsibility and collective community action to keep public spaces clean.
By extending these drives beyond campus boundaries, DARE-ICAR is successfully embedding core sustainability values into young minds and reinforcing community-led sanitation efforts across the region.
