Powering Growth: BIS and Himachal Drive MSMEs Toward Excellence

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Northern Regional Office, Chandigarh, in collaboration with the Directorate of Industries, Government of Himachal Pradesh, organized a state-level workshop on “Driving Organizational Excellence through Quality Management Systems (IS/ISO 9001:2015)” today at the H.P. Secretariat in Shimla. The event aimed to build awareness among local industries, entrepreneurs, and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) regarding the crucial role of quality frameworks in enhancing operational efficiency, product reliability, and market competitiveness.

The workshop opened with a welcome address by Shri S.C. Das, Director and Hall Marking Officer (North, BIS), who stressed the importance of institutional partnerships in cultivating quality consciousness across the state’s industrial sector. Inaugurating the event, Deepika Khatri, Joint Director of the Directorate of Industries, highlighted that adopting systematic quality management is essential to strengthening Himachal Pradesh’s industrial ecosystem and achieving sustainable long-term growth. The inaugural session was also attended by Joint Director Anil Thakur alongside General Managers from various District Industries Centres.

Speaking on the core value of standardized systems, D. Sukhvir Singh, Director of Management Systems Certification (North, BIS), explained how structured quality practices boost client satisfaction, reduce process waste, and maintain organizational consistency. Lead technical expert and former BIS Deputy Director General, D. K. Nayyar, then led deep-dive sessions detailing the practical application of IS/ISO 9001:2015 standards. He walked participants through shifting from basic operational routines to formal process monitoring, corrective action planning, and continuous performance improvement.

The workshop saw strong engagement from regional industry leaders and business owners who explored real-world application strategies for their respective enterprises. The session concluded with an interactive Q&A segment, followed by a formal vote of thanks delivered by Sahil Samdhian, Young Professional at BIS.
