In a significant stride towards bolstering the renewable energy landscape in India, SJVN (Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited) has achieved a pivotal milestone by securing a Letter of Intent for the purchase of 200 MW of solar power from Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL). This development marks a significant step towards meeting solar Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) targets and addressing power deficits in the region.

Mr. Nand Lal Sharma, Chairman & Managing Director of SJVN, disclosed that UPCL has expressed its intention to acquire 200 MW of solar power at a competitive tariff rate of Rs 2.57 per unit. The power will be sourced from SJVN’s ambitious 1000 MW Bikaner Solar Project, a venture that is taking shape in Rajasthan under the Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) Scheme. This initiative has received crucial viability gap funding support from the Government of India.

The Bikaner Solar Project is being meticulously developed through SGEL (SJVNL Green Energy Limited), a wholly-owned subsidiary of SJVN. The electricity generated from this venture will be channeled for use by various government entities, either directly or through distribution companies (DISCOMS), ensuring a broader reach and utilization.

Mr. Nand Lal Sharma emphasized that the allocation of solar power from the project will be determined through a Power Purchase Agreement to be inked between SGEL and UPCL in the near future. This agreement underscores the growing significance of renewable energy sources and their role in bolstering the country’s energy landscape.

It’s noteworthy that the 1000 MW Bikaner Solar Project is on track to be commissioned by June 2024, with a substantial investment of Rs. 5491 crores. This ambitious project is anticipated to generate approximately 2455 million units of clean energy in its inaugural year, and a cumulative total of about 56838 million units over a 25-year period. Moreover, it is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions, amounting to a substantial reduction of 27,85,077 tonnes over the project’s operational lifetime.

SJVN, as a leading Power CPSU (Central Public Sector Undertaking), is unwavering in its commitment to expand its renewable energy portfolio, aligning with the Government of India’s green energy transition goals. The company has set an ambitious mission to achieve 12,000 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2026, with a shared vision of reaching 50,000 MW installed capacity by 2040. The signing of the Letter of Intent with UPCL represents a significant leap forward in this journey, reinforcing SJVN’s role as a key player in India’s clean energy revolution and its dedication to a sustainable and greener future.
