Keekli Reporter, 2nd December, 2014, Dhalli, Shimla
Differently-abled and special children from various institutes from Shimla City and Dhalli School shared some great moments with silent smiles and loud claps as they participated in sporting events. Tehsil Welfare Officer, Shimla, Sumitra Chandel who was completely engrossed in conducting the competitions informed that a two day event was planned for special children here today at the Dumb and Deaf School, Dhalli. She said, “Today we have planned sports events such as various races and shot put for the kids as well as a painting competition in different categories”. She further added that students who had won in competitions held on 26th November, 2014, were participating in the state level function at Kullu today and were representing their various schools in different events. She was assisted by Athletics Coach, Balbir Singh and Sunita Sharma from the District Youth Services and Sports, Shimla in smoothly conducting the various sports events.
School Principal Vinay Kumari said that such events help in building the confidence of special children and they thoroughly enjoy themselves in such gatherings. She said, “For some time they too feel like any other normal kid and are quite thrilled to receive medals and awards. We have also arranged for a first aid kit in case any child needs it, however we ensure full care when it comes to our special children. Students from GSSS Mashobra and Sanjauli were also present to assist the special children in various sporting events and to cheer for them. After the events are over refreshments and lunch shall also be given to all the children and those accompanying the children from different organizations”.
Sports competitions held today were 50 meters race, 100 meter race, shot put, for both speech and hearing impaired students in the age group 6-10 years, 11-14 and 15-18 as well as the visually impaired kids as per B1, B2 and B3 categories. The painting competition was held for two groups – juniors and seniors. The painting competition was conducted under the supervision of Rakesh Chauhan, Tehsil Welfare Officer, Kotgarh, and the judges for the contest were Lata TGT Arts (GSSS Dhalli), Surender Gupta, DM (GSSS Sanjauli) and Bandana Thakur, DM (GSSS Dhalli). They however voiced in unison that all the children did a great job according to their capabilities and they all should receive an incentive. However, we were given guidelines to select winners based on their colouring skills and through observing their drawing talent (The results of the same and painting will be uploaded tomorrow).
The total number of participants from each school was – School/Home for Speech and Hearing Impaired Children: 85 participants; School/Home for Visually Challenged Children: 22; Arushi School of Hope: 8, namely Pratul, Saatvik, Kashish, Arnav, Nitin, Divyagyan, Hitesh and Moksh who were accompanied with their teachers Tina and Shiela. Eight students — Vishwas, Dikshit Sharma, Rahul Thakur, Rahul Sharma, Sushil, Shubham, Shivani Sharma represented UDAAN, who were accompanied with their teachers Krishna and Rukmani. Their teacher, Krishna informed the kids from Udaan only participated in the painting competition as 12 of their children were representing the organization at the state level function being held in Kullu. Students representing ABHI accompanied by their teachers Sunita Sharma and Hemlata Tegta were Mohit the youngest at 6 years, Kanika at 12 years and others — Shallu, Hema, Abhishek, Akash, Ayush and Neeraj — all in the age group 17 to 20 years.
It was pure fun and joy to watch these special kids enjoy themselves. There were no loud cheers or claps but sheer happiness and huge smiles on their faces as they crossed the finish line.
