Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed every year on 26 July in India to commemorate the victory of the Indian Armed Forces in the Kargil War of 1999 (Operation Vijay). The day honours the bravery, courage and supreme sacrifice of Indian soldiers who fought under extremely challenging conditions in the high-altitude terrain of Kargil and successfully reclaimed the occupied peaks. It is a tribute to the martyrs who laid down their lives while protecting the nation’s sovereignty and a reminder of the dedication, discipline and valour of the armed forces. On this day, the nation pays homage to the Kargil heroes and remembers their unmatched contribution to safeguarding India’s unity and integrity.
