World Rabies Day, observed globally on September 28, is an international awareness campaign dedicated to raising awareness about rabies prevention, educating communities on bite prevention, and accelerating efforts to eliminate human deaths from dog-mediated rabies. Coordinated by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC) and endorsed by global bodies including the World Health Organization (WHO), the date commemorates the anniversary of the death of Louis Pasteur, the French chemist and microbiologist who developed the first effective rabies vaccine. The observance brings together health organizations, veterinarians, governments, and local communities to promote mass dog vaccination, post-exposure prophylaxis, and responsible pet ownership as the primary strategies to achieve the global goal of zero human rabies deaths by 2030.
