Quit India Movement Day (also known as August Kranti Din) is observed annually on August 8 to commemorate the historic launch of the Quit India Movement in 1942 at Gowalia Tank Maidan in Bombay. On this day, Mahatma Gandhi gave the decisive call for an immediate end to British colonial rule with his iconic slogan, “Do or Die” (Karo ya Maro). Although the British government reacted with swift arrests of key national leaders, the day ignited a massive nationwide uprising driven by ordinary citizens, students, and underground networks through strikes, protests, and civil disobedience. Today, the day is marked across India with national tributes, educational programs, and ceremonies at freedom memorials to honor the extraordinary sacrifices of the freedom fighters who made the nation’s eventual independence in 1947 inevitable.
