The newly inaugurated Bhim Setu in Udaipur, located in the tribal-rich and strategically crucial Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, stands as a testament to India’s growing infrastructure in high-altitude regions. Built by the Border Roads Organization (BRO) under Project Deepak, this bridge is more than just a structure — it’s a symbol of connectivity, national pride, and engineering excellence.

Here are 7 powerful facts about Bhim Setu that make it a true marvel:

1. Inaugurated by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on BRO’s 66th Raising Day

On the momentous occasion of BRO’s 66th Raising Day, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh virtually dedicated Bhim Setu to the nation from New Delhi. The Governor of Himachal Pradesh, Shiv Pratap Shukla, participated in the ceremony virtually from Bilaspur, marking a proud moment for the state.

2. Built in Less Than a Year

Construction of Bhim Setu began on February 20, 2023, and was completed by January 17, 2025. This showcases BRO’s unparalleled efficiency and commitment to national infrastructure development, especially in challenging terrains like Lahaul-Spiti.

3. Part of 50 BRO Projects Dedicated to the Nation

Bhim Setu was among 50 vital road and bridge projects across India inaugurated on the same day, highlighting the BRO’s strategic role in enhancing the country’s defence and civilian connectivity infrastructure.

4. Engineered for Strength: 70R Load Capacity

Spanning 21 meters in length and 10 meters in width, Bhim Setu boasts a 70R load capacity. This allows it to handle heavy military and civil vehicular movement, critical for border area connectivity and logistics.

5. Strategic Significance for Border Connectivity

Situated in a sensitive region close to India’s northern frontiers, Bhim Setu is crucial for both civilian movement and defence mobilization. The bridge enhances access to remote regions and supports disaster response and national security operations.

6. Built at a Cost of ₹4.7 Crore

Despite its robust design and strategic value, Bhim Setu was constructed at a cost-effective ₹4.7 crore. The project showcases the BRO’s ability to deliver high-quality infrastructure within budgetary constraints.

7. A Salute to Team Project Deepak

Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla lauded the efforts of Project Deepak, the 94 Road Construction Company, and Chief Engineer Rajeev Kumar for their dedication. Their efforts reflect a perfect blend of discipline, engineering skill, and national service.
