Governor Flags Off Anti-Drug Rally in Chamba to Protect Culture

Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla flagged off an anti-drug awareness rally at Mehla in Chamba district, underscoring the importance of staying away from drugs to safeguard cultural heritage. We can preserve our culture only if we stay drug-free. Ending the demand is the key to ending the supply,he said while addressing a Kisan Mela and Drug De-addiction Awareness Camp at the local Khel Maidan.

The event was organized by Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Chamba. Hundreds of school students participated in the awareness rally, raising slogans against drug abuse and spreading a strong social message.

Speaking on the occasion, the Governor stressed that drug addiction is not merely a personal issue but a major societal threat. Youth have immense power, and it is this strength that can eradicate the menace of drugs, he said. He also emphasized that drug de-addiction must begin at home and requires a sustained, collective effort.

Drawing attention to the alarming rise in drug-related cases in the state, he said there has been increase in NDPS cases over the last decade. What was once perceived as a neighboring state’s issue has now become our own harsh reality, he cautioned, highlighting the infiltration of synthetic drugs like ‘chitta’ into Himachali households.

Commending the university and district administration for their efforts, Shukla reiterated that drug abuse among the youth undermines the nation’s future. Inspired by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said a state-wide drug-free campaign has been launched in Himachal Pradesh, urging citizens to support this mission wholeheartedly.

On the occasion, the Governor also felicitated progressive farmers. Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Mahajan lauded the Governor’s initiative, calling it a step in national interest. He emphasized the role of parents in addressing this menace and advocated for immediate treatment for those affected.

MLA from Chamba Neeraj Nayyar welcomed the Governor and stressed the importance of good parenting and community vigilance. He informed that the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly has approved strict laws against drug trafficking.

MLA from Bharmaur Dr. Janak Raj highlighted the scientific aspects of drug abuse and its detrimental effects on the human body and mind. He called for greater public awareness and cooperation in this fight.

Earlier, Vice-Chancellor of Dr. Y.S. Parmar University Prof. Rajeshwar Singh Chandel welcomed the Governor and underlined the urgent need to address drug addiction as households are now directly affected. Director of ATTARI Zone-I, Ludhiana Dr. Parvinder Sheron, and Abhimanyu from the police department also shared their insights on the issue.

A street play by Eklavya Kala Manch, performed by police personnel, effectively portrayed the theme of drug eradication. Head and Senior Scientist of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Chamba Dr. Dharmendra Kumar proposed a vote of thanks.

Secretary to Governor C.P. Verma, Deputy Commissioner, Chamba Mukesh Repaswal, Superintendent of Police Abhishek Yadav, and other prominent people were also present on the occasion.
