Marking the inaugural International Day for Women in Maritime, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal launched ‘Sagar Mein Samman’, a new policy to boost women’s participation in the maritime sector. The initiative aims to create a gender-inclusive maritime ecosystem and aligns with the Maritime India Vision 2030, targeting 12% female representation in technical roles by 2030.
The policy covers training, leadership development, safety, and community outreach, supporting the government’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) goals. India has seen a 739% rise in women seafarers since 2015, highlighting growing opportunities for women at sea.
Ten women achievers were honoured at the event, which also featured panel discussions on equity and sustainability. Organized by the Directorate General of Shipping and key maritime bodies, the event reinforced India’s commitment to empowering ‘Nari Shakti’ in maritime careers.
