Himachal Pradesh has been placed under a Red Alert by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) as the state braces for intense and widespread rainfall between June 29 and July 5. A convergence of a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, cyclonic circulation over Haryana, and an active monsoon trough is expected to trigger very heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of landslides, flash floods, and transport disruption.

According to IMD forecasts, the most affected districts will include Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur, and Solan, which are now under Red and Orange Alerts. Alerts have also been extended to Kullu and Chamba until July 3, with forecasts warning of flooding in low-lying areas, slippery roads, visibility issues, and possible damage to fragile infrastructure.

Authorities have urged residents and tourists to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid riverbanks and landslide-prone zones, and limit non-essential travel. “Extra caution is necessary in areas with saturated soil where landslide risk is high,” an IMD official stated.

The alert comes at a critical time during the peak tourist and pilgrimage season, raising concerns over public safety, emergency preparedness, and the resilience of infrastructure.

Citizens are encouraged to stay updated via official IMD channels (mausam.imd.gov.in/shimla) and follow trusted local news platforms like Himachalscape. Sharing unverified information on social media is strongly discouraged.
