In a significant boost to wildlife conservation efforts in Himachal Pradesh, the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), led by Mr. Soumitra Dasgupta, presented a cheque of ₹3 crore to CM Sukhu to support the newly notified Tsarap Chu Conservation Reserve. The Chief Minister expressed his gratitude, stating that the funds would play a vital role in launching early-stage conservation activities, including the preparation of a management plan, establishment of a Conservation Reserve Management Committee, and capacity building for key stakeholders.

The Tsarap Chu Conservation Reserve, officially notified on May 7, 2025, is now India’s largest conservation reserve, spanning 1,585 square kilometers in a strategic trans-Himalayan region. It borders Ladakh to the north and connects with Kibber and Chandertal Wildlife Sanctuaries, forming a critical wildlife corridor. The Reserve is home to a rich variety of Himalayan and Trans-Himalayan species, including the Snow Leopard, Tibetan Wolf, Kiang, and various high-altitude bird species.

The Chief Minister emphasized that the Reserve would promote community-driven conservation while generating sustainable livelihood opportunities through eco-tourism, nature photography, and wildlife research. He also highlighted that the Reserve would be managed by a local Conservation Reserve Management Committee, ensuring community participation in ecological stewardship.

The IBCA, a global coalition of 96 countries dedicated to protecting seven big cat species and their habitats, reiterated its commitment to supporting high-altitude conservation landscapes like Tsarap Chu. Senior state officials, including Additional Chief Secretary K.K. Pant and Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Amitabh Gautam, were also present during the handover ceremony.
