The historic Gaiety Theatre’s Conference Hall buzzed with literary energy as Kuhu Learns to Deal With Life, a tender and thought-provoking middle-grade fiction book by author Sonia Dogra, was launched under the aegis of the Keekli Charitable Trust. The event was supported by the Language & Culture Department, with HimachalTonite and Keekli as media partners, alongside Brews & Books Café, the Association of Book Clubs, and several anonymous supporters.

The launch drew an enthusiastic audience of children, educators, and members of Shimla’s literary fraternity, celebrating a story that promises to leave a lasting imprint on young hearts and minds.

Making her debut in middle-grade fiction, Sonia Dogra—an experienced educator, editor, and acclaimed poet—brings her deep empathy for children to the pages of Kuhu Learns to Deal With Life. The story is a tender exploration of childhood emotions, resilience, and hope, positioning it as a significant contribution to contemporary children’s literature.

Presiding over the event was Shriniwas Joshi, ex-civil servant, columnist, and celebrated writer. The launch featured a reflective panel discussion led by Prof. Meenakshi Faith Paul, who explored the book’s central themes, its emotional nuances, and the importance of validating children’s inner worlds through storytelling.

Adding a refreshing perspective, young readers Varahi Thakur (Auckland House School), Aarika Sharma (Monal Public School), Vihaan (St. Edward’s School), Arin (Swaran Public School), and Pritha Doegar (Auckland House School) shared their impressions of the book. Their candid reflections highlighted how Kuhu’s experiences resonated with them—offering lessons in empathy, courage, and self-understanding.

The interactive session that followed became the highlight of the evening, as children engaged in heartfelt conversation with Sonia Dogra, discussing their curiosities and takeaways from Kuhu’s story. The dialogue fostered a sense of connection between author and readers, inspiring young minds to explore literature more deeply. The presence of seasoned writers and reviewers added further richness to the event, motivating children to nurture their love for reading and creative writing.

Published by Bare Bones Publishing and Sahana Ahmed, Kuhu Learns to Deal With Life follows seven-year-old Kuhu Joshi as she learns to navigate the complexities of growing up. Through Kuhu’s eyes, the book gently reassures children that their feelings matter while urging adults to approach childhood with greater empathy and understanding.

Acclaimed children’s author Khyrunnisa A describes the book as “a story for readers of all ages,” celebrating its universal appeal and heartfelt honesty.
