The Mirabal Sisters, prominent political activists from the Dominican Republic, were assassinated. Their deaths led to the designation of November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Japanese author Mishima Yukio staged a symbolic coup attempt by taking control of a military base before committing seppuku, a ritual suicide.
