Human Rights Day 2025: Expert Lecture in Shimla

Himachal Pradesh National Law University (HPNLU), Shimla, led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Priti Saxena, organised an Expert Lecture on Human Rights Day 2025 with the theme “Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials.” The programme featured Deshabandu Senior Prof. Jeeva Niriella from the University of Colombo as the Chief Guest.

The event highlighted the importance of fostering everyday human rights awareness, encouraged scholarly engagement with global human rights challenges, and reinforced HPNLU’s commitment to nurturing socially responsible citizens. Prof. Saxena emphasised the crucial role of human rights in maintaining societal harmony and the responsibility of academic institutions in advancing human rights literacy.

Prof. Jeeva Niriella offered comparative global perspectives and urged young scholars to actively contribute to protecting and promoting fundamental freedoms. Both speakers stressed embedding human rights values in daily life and fostering collective responsibility for a strong human rights culture.

Organised by Sachin Sharma, Director of the Centre for Human Rights and Disability Studies (CHRDS), the programme showcased HPNLU’s ongoing efforts to promote human rights education, interdisciplinary research, and community outreach. Active participation from faculty and students enriched the deliberations, reaffirming the University’s mission to cultivate informed, compassionate, and socially conscious individuals dedicated to justice and equality.
