On the occasion of National Energy Conservation Day, President of India Droupadi Murmu presented the National Energy Conservation Awards 2025 and the prizes for the National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation in New Delhi today.
Addressing the gathering, the President highlighted that energy conservation is not merely an option, but a critical necessity. She emphasized that saving energy goes beyond reducing consumption—it requires responsible, efficient, and wise utilisation of energy. She urged citizens to adopt energy-efficient devices, use natural light and ventilation, and embrace solar and renewable energy sources to reduce carbon emissions and safeguard the environment.
“Every unit of energy we save reflects our responsibility towards nature and our sensitivity towards future generations,” said the President. She stressed that youth and children play a crucial role in achieving national energy conservation goals and ensuring sustainable development.
President Murmu also underlined the economic and social benefits of clean and affordable energy, noting that initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and the National Green Hydrogen Mission are reducing dependence on fossil fuels. She highlighted that India’s energy efficiency efforts in 2023-24 resulted in savings of 53.60 million tonnes of oil equivalent, leading to significant economic gains and reductions in CO₂ emissions.
Stressing the importance of collective action, the President said, “Behavioural change is crucial for achieving energy efficiency across all sectors. Adopting a balanced lifestyle in harmony with nature reflects our cultural tradition and forms the foundation of our global initiative, ‘Lifestyle for Environment – LiFE.’”
She appreciated all stakeholders contributing to energy conservation, expressing confidence that with collective responsibility, partnership, and public participation, India will continue to lead in energy efficiency and advance towards a sustainable and green future.
