The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) celebrated Minorities Day on December 18, 2025, honoring the contributions and aspirations of India’s diverse minority communities. Leaders from six communities—Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Jains, and Zoroastrians (Parsis)—shared insights and reflections on the occasion.
Dr. Michael V. Williams of Mount Carmel School highlighted the Christian community’s enduring contribution to nation-building through education and healthcare, stressing the broader societal impact beyond religious boundaries. Md. Tauhid Alam of Jamia Hamdard emphasized minority welfare within the framework of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Vikas, noting that inclusive governance is key to India’s progress. Prof. Harbans Singh of Khalsa College drew lessons from Gurubani, illustrating how coexistence and collective prosperity are lived traditions, not mere slogans.
Acharya Yeshi Phuntsok and Dr. Indu Jain candidly discussed challenges faced by Buddhist and Jain communities, seeking proactive engagement from the NCM. Veteran Parsi leader Marazban Nariman Zaiwalla highlighted minority-focused programs and lauded the NCM as a bridge fostering civic unity among diverse communities.
A large gathering of community members actively participated in an open session, raising queries on issues ranging from Minority Certificates to government scheme implementation. The interaction underscored the shared commitment to addressing concerns through dialogue and collaborative problem-solving.
Alka Upadhyaya, Secretary of NCM, outlined government initiatives aimed at empowering minority communities, including programs on education, skill development, financial assistance, and social upliftment. She stressed that minority communities have historically contributed to India’s social, cultural, and economic fabric and emphasized the government’s vision of equitable progress for all.
Upadhyaya reaffirmed that the National Commission for Minorities has been pivotal in safeguarding the rights, welfare, and empowerment of religious minorities. Through continuous engagement with state governments, stakeholders, and community leaders, the NCM ensures that minority voices are heard, concerns addressed, and aspirations fulfilled.
