NITI Aayog launched three comprehensive reports on enhancing the circular economy for End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs), waste tyres, and electronic waste—including Lithium-ion batteries—at the International Material Recycling Conference in Jaipur. The reports highlight challenges in sustainable management, propose infrastructure development, formalisation of the sector, and strengthening the International Material Recycling Conference (EPR) framework.
With India aiming for a 30% share of electric vehicles (EVs) in total vehicle sales by 2030, the demand for Lithium-ion batteries is expected to surge from 29 GWh in 2025 to 248 GWh by 2035. Similarly, ELVs are projected to rise from 23 million in 2025 to 50 million by 2030, and e-waste from 6.19 MMT in 2024 to 14 MMT by 2030. The reports stress that adopting circular economy practices in these sectors is crucial for resource efficiency, environmental sustainability, and achieving the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of a Viksit Bharat 2047.
The reports, developed with insights from ministries, regulators, industry, and experts, offer actionable recommendations to accelerate India’s transition toward a sustainable, low-carbon economy.
