The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday raised strong objections to two key proposals in Himachal Pradesh, submitting a memorandum to Governor Kavinder Gupta at Lok Bhavan.
The party opposed the proposed relocation of gynaecology services from Kamla Nehru Hospital to Indira Gandhi Medical College, as well as the steep increase in road pass fees in Shimla, calling both decisions “anti-people” and poorly planned.
A BJP delegation, including leaders such as Sanjeev Katwal and Karan Nanda, expressed concern that shifting critical services could impact maternal and neonatal healthcare. They highlighted that Kamla Nehru Hospital has long served as a major centre for women and child healthcare and warned that the move could disrupt essential services.
The party also alleged that the process lacked transparency, claiming that the transition was being carried out without proper notification or planning. It further argued that IGMC is already under pressure and adding a large specialised unit could strain existing infrastructure and affect patient care.
The memorandum pointed out that significant funds have recently been invested in upgrading Kamla Nehru Hospital and questioned the rationale behind the proposed shift. The BJP has sought clarity on future plans for the hospital and demanded a thorough review.
On the issue of road pass fees, the party criticised the sharp hike, stating that it would place an additional financial burden on residents, traders, and employees. It also objected to strict penalty provisions, describing them as excessive and not in public interest.
The BJP has called on the Governor to intervene, maintain the current status at Kamla Nehru Hospital, and roll back the proposed fee increase, warning of intensified protests if the concerns are not addressed.
