Sharp arguments, bold opinions, and confident voices marked the opening of the Slater Debates at Bishop Cotton School, where students from top institutions across the country clashed over some of today’s most debated issues.
The early rounds delivered intense face-offs, with participants tackling topics ranging from the influence of reality television to the ethics of fast fashion and the complexities of love. The competition set a high bar, with teams displaying depth of research and impressive oratory skills.
Tyndale Bisco opened strong with a win over Lawrence Sanawar on whether reality TV undermines societal values, while BCS B outperformed La Martiniere Girls in a debate on academic motivation, powered by a standout performance from Rushaan Kakkar.
Loretto School secured victory against St Thomas on mental health laws in India, and YPS edged past St Luke’s in a discussion on cyberbullying versus physical bullying. Aarya Sood and Karanveer Singh were recognised as Best Speakers in their respective rounds.
Debates on education and technology also drew attention. AVS defeated Sherwood on higher education funding, with Khushi Todi earning top speaker honours, while Wynberg Allen overcame Sanawar on the issue of social media censorship, led by Gauri Malhotra.
Environmental concerns took the spotlight as AHS won against VHS on taxing fast fashion, with Pritha named Best Speaker. One of the most gripping debates saw BCS A narrowly defeat Mallinson Girls on the motion challenging the idea of love, though Maliya from Mallinson Girls was awarded Best Speaker for her powerful address.
Organisers highlighted that beyond competition, the debates aim to encourage critical thinking and meaningful dialogue among students. With several rounds still ahead, the tournament promises more spirited exchanges in the days to come.
