In a significant anti-narcotics operation, the Special Task Force (STF) of Himachal Pradesh Police on Thursday carried out a major crackdown on illegal opium cultivation in Mandi district, officials said. The operation is part of the state-wide campaign aimed at eliminating drug abuse and curbing illicit narcotics activities across Himachal Pradesh.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the STF raided the Silsoolhari area under Katola sub-tehsil in Mandi district, where illegal cultivation of opium was suspected. During the operation, the team conducted a thorough search of the area. Officials reported that illegal opium cultivation was found spread across approximately four bighas of private land, covering nearly ten fields. Around 1,38,655 opium plants were discovered at the site.

The entire crop was destroyed on the spot by the STF to prevent its diversion into illegal trade and misuse. Following the action, a case has been registered at Padhar police station under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Further investigation is underway to identify and apprehend those responsible.

Police officials stated that the operation is part of continued efforts to strengthen law enforcement, dismantle illegal drug networks, and prevent such activities in the region. The Himachal Pradesh Police has also urged citizens, especially the youth, to report any information related to drug trafficking or abuse through the emergency helpline 112 or the nearest police station, assuring complete confidentiality.

Authorities expressed confidence that with sustained enforcement and public cooperation, the state’s anti-drug campaign will achieve strong and lasting results.
